Enzymes are prom­ising cata­lysts for organ­ic syn­thes­is, and which enable effi­cient and sus­tain­able man­u­fac­tur­ing pro­cesses; thus, they rep­res­ent an attract­ive altern­at­ive to con­ven­tion­al meth­ods. We com­bine ration­al pro­tein engin­eer­ing and dir­ec­ted evol­u­tion with bioin­form­at­ics tools to identi­fy enzymes and pep­tides for new reac­tions as well as to improve activ­it­ies and selectiv­it­ies. These biocata­lysts can be used as isol­ated enzymes or com­bined in cas­cades with oth­er biocatalysts.
